What to Do After Your Overnight Bus Arrives in Kyoto, Before Check-In
Stepping off an overnight bus in Kyoto in the early morning, most travelers have several hours before any hotel will let them check in. The best use of that time is heading straight to the temples and shrines that are already open — and still empty — long before the tour groups show up. The two easiest starting points are Fushimi Inari Taisha, which never closes its gates, and Kiyomizu-dera, which opens every single day of the year at 6:00 AM. Both reward the early traveler with grounds that are nearly empty, something you won't experience if you show up mid-morning.
Minute-by-Minute Timetable From a 6 AM Arrival: Walking Routes and Opening Times
Say your bus reaches Kyoto Station at 6:05. Kiyomizu-dera's main hall, the famous wooden stage, the Otowa Waterfall, and the Okunoin inner hall are all open to walk through from the moment the gate opens at 6:00 — there's no need to wait once you're inside. Getting to the temple area from the station takes roughly 15 minutes, which puts you at the gate a little after 6:20, well ahead of the crowds that build up later in the morning.
One timing detail catches people out: the counters selling omamori charms and goshuin stamps don't open until around 8:00. If a goshuin is part of your plan, walk the grounds first for close to two hours, then loop back to the counter once it's open rather than waiting there from the start.
Fushimi Inari Shrine Is Open 24 Hours: When to Have the Torii Gates to Yourself
Fushimi Inari Taisha is the one stop on this list with no opening or closing time at all — the shrine grounds are free to enter and walk through 24 hours a day. Arriving between 6:00 and 8:00 AM is when the thousands of vermilion torii gates climbing the mountain are at their quietest, and it's realistic to walk a long stretch of the Senbon Torii path without another visitor in the frame. The one thing that does keep normal hours is the shop selling omamori and goshuin, open from 8:30 to 17:00, so treat the shrine visit and the souvenir stop as two separate errands.
Getting there from Kyoto Station is quick: the JR Nara Line reaches Inari Station in about 5 minutes for a 150 yen fare — just make sure you board a local train, since rapid services run straight through Inari without stopping there. Coming from the Keihan Main Line instead, Fushimi Inari Station puts you about a 5-minute walk east of the shrine.
Temples You Can Reach on Foot From Kyoto Station Before 6 AM: Higashi Honganji and Nishi Honganji
If your bus arrives even earlier, before trains and buses are running on full schedules, two major temples are close enough to reach entirely on foot from Kyoto Station. Higashi Honganji opens its gates at 5:50 from March through October (closing at 17:30) and 6:20 from November through February (closing at 16:30), and it's only about a 7-minute walk from the station — free to enter, and often the very first stop for travelers who don't want to wait for anything else to start moving. Nishi Honganji opens even earlier, at 5:30, and closes at 16:30, about a 15-minute walk away, also with no admission fee.
Nanzenji and Tofukuji are worth saving for later in the day: general admission at both doesn't start until around 8:30 to 8:40, which is too late to fit into a 5-to-7 AM window right after an overnight bus. What About Your Luggage? Coin Lockers and a Backup Plan for Bus Delays
Traveling with a suitcase makes an early morning temple loop trickier, but Kyoto Station is set up for exactly this. Outdoor coin lockers near the Karasuma Chuo-guchi east side are available 24 hours a day, with fees running from about 400 to 700 yen depending on size. The catch is that lockers fill up fast in the early morning rush — if everything near the entrance is taken, it's worth checking a staffed baggage storage or delivery counter as a backup rather than dragging a suitcase up temple steps.
It's also worth building a little slack into your plan: delays affect roughly 10% or fewer overnight bus trips on average, but if yours does run late, shift your priorities toward whichever temple opens soonest and sits closest to the station — Higashi Honganji, if in doubt — rather than trying to force the original order.

京都駅からのアクセスは早く、JR奈良線に乗れば約5分、運賃150円で稲荷駅に着きます。ただし各駅停車に乗ることを忘れないでください。快速列車は稲荷駅を素通りして停車しません。京阪本線を利用する場合は、伏見稲荷駅から神社まで東へ徒歩約5分です。
午前6時前に京都駅から徒歩で行ける寺院：東本願寺と西本願寺
バスがさらに早く到着し、電車やバスがまだフルダイヤで動いていない時間帯であれば、京都駅から徒歩だけで行ける大きな寺院が2つあります。東本願寺は3月から10月は午前5時50分に開門(閉門は午後5時30分)、11月から2月は午前6時20分に開門(閉門は午後4時30分)し、駅からわずか徒歩約7分です。拝観無料で、他に動き出すものを待ちたくない旅行者にとって、しばしば最初の目的地になります。西本願寺はさらに早く午前5時30分に開門し、閉門は午後4時30分、駅から徒歩約15分で、こちらも拝観無料です。
南禅寺と東福寺は一日の後半のために取っておく価値があります。両寺とも一般拝観の開始は午前8時30分から8時40分頃までで、夜行バス到着直後の午前5時から7時の時間帯に組み込むには遅すぎます。ご利用のバスの詳しいルートと到着時刻を確認し、この時間帯をどれだけ活用できるか正確に把握しておきましょう。
